Difficult do you call it, Sir? I wish it were impossible. [on hearing a famous violinist]

Samuel Johnson
About This Quote

This quote was said by Antonio Stradivari, the greatest violin maker of all time. He was saying that he wished it were impossible for anyone to play as well as the famous violinist Paganini. Stradivari is known to have made over 1,000 violins. However, he made them out of wood which was extremely expensive at the time.

So, he very rarely sold them because they weren’t used much. However, Paganini is known to have played on his own violins. The chairs in which he played were made of ivory and were worth less than his violin.

He would play on these chairs because they were much easier to play on.
